π€·ββοΈ How to Deal with a Music Snob
Jan 16, 2024
We've all encountered them - music snobs! They always seem to carry an air of superiority about their taste and often dismiss or belittle the genres or artists that don't align with their preferences.
When I was in school, I met some truly incredible musicians filled with knowledge and excited to collaborate with anyone! Yet, I also remember those who fell under the snob category. π
π€ Understanding Music Snobbery
Music snobbery often stems from a place of pride in someone's musical knowledge or taste (which isn't necessarily a bad thing!). However, when a person thinks they know best, they may not fully understand or even see their own social blind spots.
This can result in them being dismissive or disrespectful towards different music styles or the preferences of others. It's this attitude that leads to a narrow and exclusionary view of the entire musical spectrum!
As someone passionate about personal experiences through music, I want to share some tips on how you can handle a music snob when they inevitably cross your path!
π Strategies for Handling Music Snobbery
-
π«‘ Stay Respectful: Even if you disagree with a music snob's opinions, try to maintain respect in the conversation. Staying grounded can often diffuse tension and encourage a collaborative exchange of ideas!
-
π§ Share Your Perspectives: Don't be afraid to share your own musical tastes. You like what you like for a reason! Sometimes, providing a different perspective can open up someone's mind to new possibilities in music.
-
π§ Practice Mindful Criticism: If you face criticism about your music preferences, respond with constructive feedback. It's okay to call them out on their criticism if it's not constructive or useful in any way. That music snob might not realize the impact of their feedback.
-
π Focus on Common Ground: Try to find some common musical interests. Focusing on what you both enjoy can turn a potentially negative conversation into a positive one!
-
π Agree to Disagree: Remember, it's okay to have different opinions. Music is subjective, and there's room for all preferences. Sometimes the best way to handle a music snob is to simply agree to disagree.
-
πΆ Walk Away If Needed: If the conversation becomes too one-sided or disrespectful, it's perfectly acceptable to just walk away. Some people can't be changed or reasoned with and your enjoyment of music shouldn't be dampened by someone else's narrow views!
Personally, I'm an introvert who used to struggle with confrontation... especially when encountering a music snob!
Once I understood these strategies, I realized I had the opportunity to create a positive discussion and a way to broaden each other's musical perspectives.
So be sure to keep these tips in mind the next time you meet a music snob yourself!
