Are You Waiting for Permission to Compose?

I've been thinking a lot lately about the paradox of being a composer.

On one hand, making art is this incredible, freeing thing where the only rules are the ones you give yourself.

But on the other hand, it takes a huge amount of work to get "good"...

To reach that place where the creative act feels confident and effortless!

There's this gap between our creative vision and our current skills where it's so easy to get stuck. We tell ourselves we're "waiting" for...

• The right moment
• Better skills
• Better gear

But I've learned that waiting until you're comfortable just causes our best ideas and overall momentum to freeze!

We let perfectionism become self-sabotage.

If a piece is never finished, it can never be judged, right?

But it also means it can never succeed and more importantly, we have less room to grow!

I think our music journey can feel like a constant upstream...

We have to keep moving just to stay in the same spot.

That's why I really believe we have to start creating now!

With the tools you have...

To the best of your current abilities! 

But "creating now" doesn't mean you have to do it alone.

Yes, I'm a big believer in learning and expanding on your your craft. And I did that for years!

I believed that if I just consumed enough knowledge, eventually I would be able to funnel it into all of my future music from there on out. But here's the thing...

All the knowledge in the world doesn't help if you don't consistently put in the work to apply it, one step at a time.

And even more importantly, putting in the work without having someone else to help you refine it is where we can really get stuck.

It’s like practicing in a vacuum. You don't know what's working, what's not, or what your blind spots are. That's where true growth happens...

A cycle of learning, applying, and getting trusted feedback.

I've been building a space founded on these exact principles. A place that rejects the idea that there's only one "right way" to be a composer and instead encourages action, experimentation, and supportive collaboration.
