π¨βπ« Who Are Your Music Mentors?
Feb 23, 2022
Have you ever stopped to think about who's been a personal mentor for you in your own music?
Lately, I've been reflecting on my own mentors over the past few years and I've realized that there are 3 different types of mentors for us creatives! This could be someone you go to for music lessons or even someone that you admire! Maybe they're a professional in the field or simply on your level.
Let's take a look at this quick break-down of mentors:
1. The Famous/Well-Established Composer
-
You might not see these composers as your personal mentor but there's truly so much you can learn by watching interviews, analyzing their scores, and understanding their own personal style of writing.
-
Even an hour of their time is extremely valuable (Zoom, Masterclass, Workshops, etc.)
2. The Composer Just Above Your Level
-
I love this type of mentor because these composers are still working hard to make a name for themselves.
-
They're actively focusing on their craft but probably has a few years of experience under their belt.
-
This kind of mentor will most likely understand your struggles because they aren't that far removed from them!
3. The Composer AT Your Level
-
This might be a weird one but you can learn so much from others at your own level
-
Much like you, these composers are trying to learn everything they possibly can but the great thing is that you both can teach and learn from one another!
It doesn’t matter how far you are in your own musical journey; The key with any of these mentors is to be open and receptive to learning because everyone has something of value to offer!
I hope you take a moment to reflect on which of these mentors you can relate with. Maybe you even have one of each!
