I’ve had plenty of moments in my music career where I felt stuck—like I wasn’t sure where to focus next or how to move forward.
That lack of direction can feel overwhelming, and for a long time, I thought the solution was waiting for inspiration or the “perfect time” to get started.
But what I’ve realized is that clarity doesn’t come from waiting—it comes from action!
When I’m feeling lost, I’ve found the best thing to do is take a step—any step.
Starting doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. It just has to happen. And it can happen today. Right now. With one small step.
If you’ve been wanting to tackle a new project, find opportunities, or organize your workflow, you don’t have to wait. You can start building momentum now.
This is where 3-3-1 Goals come in!
It’s a simple way to get clear on your next steps and actually move forward—all in just 5 minutes.
Here’s how it works:
💭 Picture Yourself in 3 Months
Take a moment to imagine where you want to be 3 months from now.
(To be specific, that's February 19, 2025!)
What’s one thing you’d love to have accomplished as a composer? Maybe it’s:
🎬 Scoring your first (or next) short film.
😌 Finally creating a workflow that doesn’t stress you out.
🤝 Building connections with collaborators or mentors who inspire you.
Don’t overthink this.
Just pick one goal that excites you and write it down.
Clarity makes it easier to take action—and once you can see the finish line, the steps to actually get there start to appear!
Got your goal? Good!
Let's move on to the second "3" in the 3-3-1 Goal!
🪜 Choose 3 Tiny Steps
Next, think about what’s standing between you and that goal.
What are some small, necessary things you could do today to start closing the gap?
To make it easy, just think of three!
These should feel manageable—things you could do in just a few minutes but that still move you forward.
Here are some ideas:
💬 Message someone you’ve been meaning to collaborate with.
🗂️ Spend 10 minutes organizing your sample libraries or templates.
🎸 Look up one opportunity—like a gig, competition, or festival submission.
The key here isn’t to overhaul your entire process.
It’s to find small wins that create momentum.
⚡️ Do 1 Thing...Right Now!
Now comes the most important part: pick one of those three steps and do it right now.
📧 Send that email.
☑️ Organize that folder.
🗓️ Add that deadline to your calendar.
Whatever it is, don’t let this moment pass without taking action!
If you really can’t do it immediately—just commit to doing it later today.
The important thing is to decide exactly when and stick to it.
🎉 Celebrate the Start
Did you do your 1 thing? Great!
You’ve taken a real step toward your goal. That’s something worth celebrating!
It might not seem like much right now, but even the smallest action can lead to big changes.
What matters is that you’ve started—and that momentum will carry you forward!
I really like this 3-3-1 approach because it’s simple, quick, and effective.
You don’t need to wait for the “perfect time” to start your goals. (Definitely don't wait until January 1st like we do every single year!!)
You just need five minutes and the willingness to start.
What’s one step you’re taking today? I’d love to hear what you’re working toward! 😄
