😳 Are You Saying Yes to the Wrong Composing Gigs?

By saying no to the gigs that don’t resonate with you, you’re opening the door to potential projects to DO!

It's so easy to fall into the pattern of saying YES to any and every project that comes our way!

  • We want to gain experience

  • We want to add something new to our CV

  • We need to pay the bills…

But sometimes, taking on too much can leave us feeling drained and creatively empty. This is what happens when we say yes to the WRONG kinds of projects!

A few weeks ago, I was in a ThinkSpace Education webinar and they brought on a guest speaker: games composer Austin Wintory!

Journey (2012), Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (2015), Stray Gods (2023)

During some live Q&A, someone asked him…

What makes you say YES to a project?

And Austin shared some incredible insights into his own approach. He breaks it down into three main factors:

  • 🤝 Finding Your People: Collaborating with awesome people who appreciate you and your work makes a world of difference – even those trickier projects become way more enjoyable!

  • ❤️ Creative Enjoyment: Does the project light you up? Having some genuine excitement not only for the music you're creating but the core of the project itself is essential for staying motivated!

  • 🗓️ Logistics: Of course, money and deadlines matter! But Austin believes if the other two factors click, figuring out the logistics becomes much easier.

I know that not everyone is in a place to turn down projects that come their way. If you’re just starting out or juggling a day job, your options might feel severely limited- that’s okay, this can take time!

These are simply steps to help guide you to a more fulfilling and ideal career! By saying no to the gigs that don’t resonate with you, you’re opening the door to potential projects to DO!

This week’s YouTube video is all about this approach and actively taking steps to work on projects that align with your ideal career and goals!
