If I had to start my composing career over today, I wouldn’t do it the same way I did nearly 10 years ago!
Back then, I got caught up in the distractions…
🎛️ Overspending on fancy gear or libraries
🎥 Watching endless, super specific tutorials
💻 Constantly tweaking my website
All these things made me feel like I was “working” but didn’t actually moving me forward!
Looking back now, I realize that yes- those things can be important…but within context.
None of it mattered or really helped me land composing work!
So if I had to start fresh today, here’s what I’d focus on instead:
🎯 Get Clear on My Goals – It sounds obvious, but back then I didn’t really know what kind of composer I wanted to be or what projects I actuallywanted to work on. Without clarity, I spent a lot of time saying yes to the wrong things.
🤝 Build Relationships Early – I used to think I needed a perfect portfolio before I could reach out to anyone. But I’ve learned that relationships are what create opportunities.
🎧 Keep My Portfolio Simple – I wouldn’t waste months polishing a massive reel. Instead, I’d focus on 3-5 strong tracks that reflect what I actually want to do.
🔄 Stick to a Routine – This is something I didn’t prioritize early on. If I were starting over, I’d focus on small, consistent habits—writing, connecting, learning—that build up over time.
This is the exact mindset and approach I break down in my latest video. I wanted to share this because I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re trying to figure out where to even begin!
