This year, I didnât write a single note of music.
At first, it just felt like I was âbusy.â
I was focused on things likeâŠ
đ Learning about the business side of music
đ» Helping composers with their writing and orchestration
đș Shifting my YouTube channel in a new direction
And for a while, I believed that was enough.
But as the months went on, I started to realize something:
I wasnât writing because I was afraid.
Afraid that I wasnât good enough anymore. Afraid that Iâd forgotten how to create something meaningful!
Imposter syndrome is sneaky like that.
It doesnât always show up as self-doubtâit can look like procrastination.
Like telling yourself youâre âtoo busyâ or that youâll get to it later.
And in my case, later turned into a year.
The longer I stayed away from composing, the worse I felt.
I started questioning myselfâwho am I as a composer if Iâm not even composing?
I saw friends and other musicians on social media (as if THATâS helpful đ)âŠ
đ§ Releasing new music
đïž Scoring awesome projects
đ¶ Finding success in their creative lives
And it made me feel even more disconnected.
But the thing is... I know what I have to do to achieve those things!
I just fell into the trap of not doing it!
Sometimes itâs easier to help other composers with where they struggle than it is to help myself.
I came across a quote from Rich Litvin that says...
Confidence isnât a requirement. Itâs a result.
Imposter syndrome never fully goes away either.
But you can get better at recognizing when it tries to make decisions for you.
So as I look toward 2025, Iâm choosing music again!
Because no matter how far I push music away, I always come back to it.
That tells me itâs part of who I am!
If youâve ever felt disconnected from something you love, or if imposter syndrome has made you question yourself, I hope this helps.
Youâre definitely not alone.
This is exactly what my LAST video of the year is all about!
Definitely check it out! đ
Thanks for sticking with me this year.
Hereâs to showing up for ourselves! đ
