In today's music world, we're often expected to be jacks-of-all-trades. Composing, orchestrating, mixing – the list goes on. But here's a thought: isn't it better to actually excel in what we love most?

🧭 What's Your True North?

Think carefully: what's your main focus? Where do your strengths lie? For me, it's always been composition. It's where my heart truly finds joy in the music process! Sure, I'm expected to understand other aspects like mixing for example, but I already know it's not my forte- and that's fine! Focusing on composition has made my work more authentic and satisfying!

πŸͺ€ The Trap of Multiple Roles

However, in such a competitive industry, we're expected to excel in every aspect of music production and take on many more roles than just the writing side of music- and this can be extremely overwhelming! Here's the thing, realizing that mastering every skill isn't necessary actually liberates us! It allows us to channel our energy and creativity into what we do best! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe in exploring your weaknesses as well. It's incredibly important to be knowledgable about all the different roles composers take on. But doubling down on our strengths is what truly makes us stand out from the crowd!

🀝 Power of Collaboration

This is the fun part! Working with specialists, like mix engineers, orchestrators, conductors, etc. can transform our music. This collaboration isn't about being less capable; it's about bringing the best of different worlds together. Their expertise can complement our creative vision, resulting in a more polished and impactful final product!

Focusing on our passion, whether it's composing, orchestrating, or another aspect of music, frees us from the limits of overreaching. It allows us to dive deeper into our craft. So, let's lean into our strengths and collaborate where needed!

🧐 Pro Tips for Composers

  • 🎼 Prioritize your strengths; it's where your heart lies.

  • 🀝 Embrace collaboration for areas like mixing & mastering to elevate your music.

  • πŸ’‘ Focus on what ignites your passion to let your music flourish.
