๐Ÿ›‘ Stop Competing with Your Collaborators

Instead of seeing these composers as our competition in the industry, what if we began to see them as potential collaborators?

In today's music industry, it's easy to find yourself looking up to certain composers, admiring their work, and maybe even envying their success. It's natural to sometimes view these individuals as competitors, especially when you're working hard towards the same goals and recognition. However, I want to present a different perspective today...

Instead of seeing these composers as our competition in the industry, what if we began to see them as potential collaborators? This shift in mindset can open up a world of opportunities and offer a ton of benefits for your career and personal growth!

Why Collaborators, Not Competitors?

  1. Shared Knowledge and Experience: Every composer has a unique journey, filled with lessons learned, mastered techniques, and gained experiences. By collaborating, you can tap into this wealth of knowledge, learning insights that you might not have discovered on your own.

  2. Diverse Creativity: Two minds are better than one, especially when they come from different backgrounds or have distinct styles! Working together can lead to a mix of ideas, resulting in compositions that are fresh, innovative, and memorable.

  3. Networking Opportunities: Building relationships with fellow composers can introduce you to a wider network of professionals in the industry. This could lead to more opportunities for projects, performances, and collaborations.

Taking the First Steps

Ready to take that first step? The idea of reaching out to someone you hope to collaborate with might seem daunting! Or maybe you don't even know who or where to start. So here are some ideas to get you going:

  • Attend Workshops and Seminars: These events are excellent places to naturally meet like-minded individuals. Engage in conversations, share your experiences, and stay open to collaboration.

  • Join Online Forums and Groups: Many online platforms cater to composers and musicians. Engage in discussions, share your work, and be open to feedback. Social media plays such a huge role in our composing careers today! So be sure to take advantage of the platforms that you feel most comfortable with!

  • Direct Outreach: If there's someone you particularly admire, don't hesitate to reach out. Compliment their work, express your interest in learning from them, and propose potential collaboration ideas. This is actually how I've gotten to know and work with some of my closest music friends!

Shifting from a mindset of competition to collaboration can be transformative. It not only fosters a sense of community but also paves the way for personal and professional growth. Embrace the idea of learning from one another, connecting on deeper levels, and overall- creating resonating music!
