I recently read "Superfans" by Pat Flynn, book #11 in the 2024 Book Challenge!
For those who have been following along, or if you're just tuning in and want to join the book challenge, you can check out the ongoing list of books I've been exploring here.
Let me start by saying that I absolutely LOVED this book!
Also, if you want to check out Pat's the book for yourself, you can pick up a copy through one of my affiliate links throughout the email!
Just like with the rest of the books in our challenge, I tried to read it through the lens of a music career.
As I was going through, I found such important insights for musicians and composers who want to deepen their impact and expand their connection with their audience!
And if you’ve taken my Composer Strengths Explorer, you might know how impact is one of the 6 core strengths that we can lean in to!
At the start of the book, Pat Flynn introduces the "Pyramid of Fandom," which is key to understanding how your casual audience can become superfans.
This pyramid explains the progression of fan engagement through four key stages:
👥 Casual Audience: Listeners who encounter your music through various channels without a deeper connection.
⚡️ Active Audience: Those who regularly engage with your content and begin to appreciate your work.
🤝 Connected Community: An active group that not only engages with your content but also interacts with each other, creating a supportive network.
🦸♂️ Superfans: The pinnacle of engagement, these are devoted fans who actively promote and advocate for your music.
According to Pat, this progression is key to intentionally nurturing your casual audience (Spotify listeners, social media followers, etc) into Superfans!
And like with every book, here are my 3 main takeaways! 👇
💬 Engage with Fans at Every Level:
Especially when you’re first getting started, Pat emphasizes how important it is that you take the time to engage with the people in your audience!
This could be from simple replies in the comments to deeper interactions through email or DMs.
What can you do to actually help somebody else through your engagement?
Are you…
🗣️ Using language that resonates
😥 Addressing needs or pain points
🤩 Maintaining consistent, meaningful interactions?
If you can prove to someone that you care about them as a potential fan, they’ll likely take a moment to appreciate how you actively went out of your way to engage with them!
🤝 Community Building as a Foundation:
A key theme in Pat’s approach is the role of community!
By creating a dedicated community where fans can chat with one another and you, you give people the space to make genuine connections.
You may or may not be surprised how valuable a sense of community actually is!
Think of…
💬 Discord servers
👨🏫 Patreon/Memberships
🏓 Clubs
👉 etc.
People connect with people!
How can you give them a supportive network that not only supports you but also encourages deeper engagement across the larger audience?
❤️ Empowering and Recognizing Fans:
Empowering your audience by acknowledging and celebrating their wins is a great way to create Superfans!
How can you highlight their stories, their wins, their involvement in a way so that they feel valued?!
Now, I don’t mean doing this in a way that comes across as fake or disingenuous.
Instead, it’s about being genuinely excited about the success of someone else and knowing that you had some small part in that!
And when other people see how much of an impact you’ve had on your audience, you’ll see the snowball effect of Superfan growth!
I think as composers, it’s important to recognize that the way you interact during projects, the music that you put out into the world…it’s all going to leave some form of impact.
So what can you do today to start making sure it’s a positive one?
Side note! I got to meet Pat during a conference earlier this year and he was such a down to Earth, cool, genuine guy! Plus we talked about Pokémon which was awesome!
