😳 Why I Left the Studio & Stepped Out of My Comfort Zone

I’ve gotten too stuck in the same old recording routine. So I recorded my Pokemon-Inspired Guide for Aspiring Composers video outside as a vlog!

If you caught last week’s newsletter, I related a composer’s journey to a Pokemon adventure! I had such a fun time with that little theory, so I thought I’d make a video about it!

My initial reaction was to sit down and script out a video, bullet point by bullet point, & record from the comfort of my studio…

  • 💡 Great lighting

  • 🎙️ Shure microphone

  • 📝 Notes in front of me

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I needed to step outside of my comfort zone.

I think I’ve gotten too stuck in the same old recording routine and a video that’s quite literally about a journey and exploration should be more fun and adventurous!

Don’t get me wrong, I love the studio but I hate feeling like I have to be so polished on YouTube. I’d love for my videos to feel more like a conversation!

So for this video, I took out my older secondary camera, a shotgun mic and a handheld stand and recorded my thoughts as I went for a walk!

This was probably one of the best things I did for myself- I forced myself out of a script and just spoke about that Pokemon comparison from the heart.

Of course, I made some missteps and mistakes along the way but I tried to keep the video real and authentic.

Now I still love recording videos in my studio but I’m thinking I might do less highly edited content and just chat about what I want to share! Maybe every so often, I’ll do some more walks?

What do you think?

  • Would you like to see more vlog style content?

  • More of my usual in-studio edited content?

  • Or maybe a mix of both?
